A very quick means of sharing a collection of postcards my mom saved over the years, both front and back of the cards. She enjoyed having the cards from various trips and locations, beautiful scenery and memories.
This is a subset of the cards she saved. Some are in photo albums, given away or lost over the years. Postcards were more popular in the past both for writing to others as well as having a pictorial memory of places that one visited.
Front/Back UI: I wanted to create something that I could use to flip an image from front to back easily for future projects. The postcard was the perfect example of needing this kind of user interface. I now have a reusable JS tool.
The Scanner: Doing what it does well, it also created a some unexpected variables. Scanning the backs of the cards made it impossible for the scanner to auto detect edges because the cards and the back of the scanner are both white. In some cases, it cropped parts of the back as well as front. Scalloped or curved edges were also a problem. A few work arounds exist to deal with these issues. A quick lesson for future projects.
Image Count: Finally, I ended up with 116 images for this project. Finding the right resolution was something I have been trying to pinpoint for various reasons. This project is about 4M for images in total. Zooming in was never in scope, so minimal resolution was the approach.
This was a quick project, most of the time was spent getting the images scanned, cropped and labeled correctly for the UI. It is a good thing to know for future projects and collaborations. Managing scope creep is always a thing with any project, getting all the images in place before building is highly recommended.
1950 Postmark: The card from 1950 is pretty cool item in the collection. Only 1 cent to send the postcard, but it also got forwarded due to an address change (?) so postmarked twice. All for 1 penny.
The Rothko Chapel / Broken Obelisk pair: We went to see this together during one of her visits to Houston.
Disneyland Days: The 2 from Disneyland are fun, like looking into the past. Tomorrowland with the iconic monorail.
The Twin Towers: Before. Every photo of them carries more weight than it used to.
Juno II Rocket: While not a postcard, it was saved with the post cards and is now part of my NASA and related space exploration collection.
Postal Card Trivia: The commemorative postal card is a little piece of history and a blast to the past where one could get postal cards from the post office that were simple, useful and postage paid.
